NB: Despite the current COVID 19 restrictions, we continue to run the 2019-20 course online and we are recruiting for our 2020-21 courses.  We will begin the course online if necessary, returning to face-to-face as soon as we are able to do so.  So, please feel confident to apply!

The Diploma in Groupwork Practice (Foundation year) runs in York each year between September/ October and June/July. This foundation training in therapeutic groupwork is offered in conjunction with the Institute of Group Analysis (London), the premier institute in the UK for the training of group psychotherapists. This remarkable course, running for more than 50 years, has given over 8,500 students in centres across the U.K. and Europe an introduction to the group-analytic way of thinking about and working with groups.

The Diploma in Groupwork Practice – Foundation Year 15-day course takes place across thirteen Fridays and two Saturdays over the academic year. It includes a mix of theory, applications in practice and experiential learning.

Amongst others, theoretical subjects covered will include:

  • Attachment.
  • Unconscious processes.
  • Organisational dynamics.
  • ‘Dark forces’ in the group.
  • Assessing for and setting up groups.
  • Facilitating groups.
  • When to consider group therapy.

Participants will also be invited to contribute issues from their workplace.

The experiential component takes the form of six median groups (jointly with the Diploma Year students) and 45 hours in total spent in an unstructured small group conducted by an experienced group analyst. The objective of this is neither teaching nor treatment, but participants often describe the group as a significant personal development experience.

Participants will represent a creative mix of disciplines and work settings. The course will appeal to:

  • Healthcare and social care professionals (clinical and managerial).
  • Counsellors and therapists.
  • Teachers.
  • Trainers.
  • Voluntary sector staff.
  • Business personnel.
  • Organisational consultants.

as well as those who are simply curious about their experiences in groups.

There is no requirement in the Foundation year to be running or intending to run a therapeutic group.

A Certificate will be awarded on completion of the course with at least 80% attendance. Successful completion of the foundation year enables students to apply for the Diploma Year.

Applications for the Diploma in Groupwork Practice Foundation Year can be made right up until the start date in October, subject to available places. However we recommend early booking if possible, as places are limited. Bursary funding is available from various sources: note that – for some of these – the deadline for application is 30 June 2020.

The 2020-21 course prospectus and application form are available to download below. Please also read our cancellation policy. Some bursary funding is available for eligible students.
